A suffering woman touches Christ's cloak and is healed

A woman who suffered a hemmorage for 12 years touched the fringe of Jesus’ cloak and was healed.

The gospel writers signal a transition to this event by writing that crowds pressed against Jesus as he walked to the home of Jairus.

Woman conceals her faith

As the crowds pressed aginst Jesus, an ill woman approached. She believed if she touched Jesus' clothes that she would be healed. Anonymous in the crowd, she touched Jesus’ clothes and was healed.

Mark 5:24-29

He went with him, and a great multitude followed him, and they pressed upon him on all sides. 25A certain woman, who had an issue of blood for twelve years, 26and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse, 27having heard the things concerning Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd, and touched his clothes. 28For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be made well.” 29Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.

Matthew wrote that she touched the fringe of Jesus' garment. Jewish men were commanded to put blue tassels on their garments as a reminder of God's laws (Numbers 15:37-39).

Matthew 9:19-21

Jesus got up and followed him, as did his disciples. 20 Behold, a woman who had an issue of blood for twelve years came behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; 21 for she said within herself, “If I just touch his garment, I will be made well.”

Luke 8:42b-44

But as he went, the multitudes pressed against him. 43A woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her living on physicians, and could not be healed by any, 44came behind him, and touched the fringe of his cloak, and immediately the flow of her blood stopped.

This woman's faith was most remarkable. Prior to this event no person had been healed by just touching Christ's clothes. She believed that was all she needed to do receive a complete cure. She also believed, mistakenly, that Jesus would not notice.

Insights

According to Leviticus 15:25-27, this woman’s illness rendered her ceremonially unclean. To touch a rabbi would render him unclean as well.

This woman spent all she had on doctors. Mark states that she “suffered” under many physicians, and spent all that she had. Luke says she spent all her living on physicians, but they could not heal her.
