Herod the Great

Herod the Great ruled over Palestine when Jesus was born. Herod murdered several members of his own family, and was generally hated by his subjects. Herod Antipas

Herod Antipas was the son of Herod the Great. He took his half-brother's wife, and imprisoned John the Baptist for condemning this action. At the request of his step-daughter, Herod Antipas ordered the beheading of John (Matthew 14:1-12).
